Police Relocate Eid Cattle Market to Restore Traffic Flow Near Metro Station

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) cleared a makeshift cattle market from beneath the metro rail station in the city’s Diabari area on Tuesday, restoring traffic flow to the heavily congested corridor. The intervention followed reports that the unauthorized expansion of the livestock market onto the main thoroughfare had paralyzed local transport.

As the largest and most expensive leased site under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), the Diabari cattle market has seen a massive influx of animals ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. Merchants have been transporting livestock from across the country via truck and waterway, with the arrival of large bulls drawing significant crowds of buyers.

According to a press release issued by the DMP, the market organizers had exceeded their designated boundaries, encroaching upon the main road and the space directly under the metro station. In response to the resulting gridlock, the DMP’s Uttara division conducted an enforcement operation to clear the space and facilitate the movement of vehicles.

Authorities have since issued a formal warning to the market’s leaseholder. The police have signaled a strict zero-tolerance policy, confirming that any future attempts to utilize the metro station vicinity for livestock sales will result in immediate fines through mobile courts.
