BNP leader Rezaul Hassan Lodi appointed chairman of Sylhet Development Authority

Rezaul Hassan Koyes Lodi, acting president of the Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, has been appointed as the first chairman of the Sylhet Development Authority (SDA). The Ministry of Public Administration issued a formal notification on Thursday confirming the appointment, which grants Lodi the status of a Grade-2 official on a one-year contractual basis.
Under the terms of the Sylhet Development Authority Act, 2023, the appointment requires Lodi to sever all professional ties with other businesses, government, semi-government, or private organizations upon assuming his new role. The specific conditions of his tenure will be further detailed in a forthcoming contract.
Lodi brings extensive local governance experience to the position, having served four terms as a Sylhet City Corporation councilor and former panel mayor. A prominent figure in local politics and sports, he has held various leadership roles within the Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, including vice president and organizing secretary. He notably abstained from the June 2023 city corporation elections to align with party directives.
Reflecting on his appointment, Lodi expressed gratitude to BNP leadership and emphasized his commitment to leveraging his decades of public service experience. He noted that his long-standing rapport with the city’s residents would serve as a foundation for his efforts to fulfill his new responsibilities effectively.
The formation of the Sylhet Development Authority marks a significant milestone for the region. While the cabinet granted principle approval for the authority’s draft law in August 2022 and the National Parliament passed the official act in October 2023, the organization has remained dormant since its inception. Lodi’s appointment, coming two and a half years after the authority’s initial formation, is the first step toward making the body operational.
