Cattle Trader Killed in Attack by Leaseholders at Savar Animal Market

A cattle trader died following a violent altercation at a makeshift animal market in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Wednesday night. Fifty-year-old Shahidullah Kaysar, a pharmacy owner from the Dhamrai sub-district, succumbed to his injuries after being beaten by individuals allegedly acting on behalf of the market’s leaseholders.
According to witnesses and family members, the incident began when a dispute broke out over space allocation at the Paragram cattle market in the Shimulia union. Kaysar, who had traveled to the market with his brother and nephew to sell livestock, reportedly confronted an individual who attempted to tether animals in a space already reserved for the family’s remaining four cattle. Following the initial disagreement, the individual alerted market officials, who subsequently launched an attack on the traders.

The victim’s nephew, Firoz Kabir, stated that the situation escalated rapidly when he was targeted by the leaseholders’ associates. When Kaysar intervened to protect his nephew, he was severely beaten. In addition to the physical assault, family members alleged that the attackers seized 40,000 taka in cash, which had been earned from the earlier sale of goats.
Kaysar was rushed to the Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead by attending physicians. Local police confirmed the recovery of the body and noted that the case is currently under investigation. Because the market site falls under the jurisdiction of the Ashulia police, the case file has been transferred to that station for further legal processing.
