The Joypurhat district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled two senior leaders from the Akkelpur upazila branch for engaging in conduct deemed detrimental to the party’s discipline and ideals.

Mahbul Alam, president of the Sonamukhi Union BNP, and general secretary Mahbur Alam were removed from their positions following reports that they ignored official party obligations during the 45th death anniversary of party founder Ziaur Rahman on May 30. While the BNP observed the day with formal mourning programs nationwide, the two leaders were absent from all designated events.

According to an official notice signed by district BNP convener Golzar Hossain and senior joint convener Masud Rana Prodhan, the duo instead participated in an entertainment event that included musical performances and dances. The party leadership further alleged that the two men inappropriately invoked the names of district BNP officials and State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari, who serves as the member of parliament for the Joypurhat-2 constituency, to legitimize their actions.

District convener Golzar Hossain stated that the unauthorized celebration directly contradicted the solemn nature of the day and caused significant reputational damage to the party. He emphasized that the decision to expel the leaders was a necessary disciplinary measure to uphold organizational standards.

Attempts to reach the expelled leaders for comment via their mobile phones were unsuccessful.
