Barisal University got a new vice-chancellor amid the teachers’ movement

The Ministry of Education has removed Barisal University Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Taufiq Alam within the ‘Complete Shutdown’ program of teachers. Professor Mamun Or Rashid of Patuakhali Science and Technology University has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Mamun Or Rashid has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Barisal University for four years in a notification signed by Sultan Ahmed, Assistant Secretary of Government General University Branch of Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education on Thursday afternoon. This notification was issued by order of the President.

The newly appointed Professor Mamun Or Rashid was once the Treasurer of Barisal University. He was removed within a few days due to a conflict with the then Vice-Chancellor Shuchita Sharmin. In a separate notification on May 13 last year, the then Vice-Chancellor Suchita Sharmin, Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Professor Mamun Or Rasheed were dismissed by the Ministry of Education.
Later Professor Mohammad Taufiq Alam of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department of Rajshahi University was appointed as Interim Vice-Chancellor of Barisal University. On September 10 of the same year, he was appointed as a full-time vice-chancellor for four years. But the teachers have unitedly started a movement against him on the allegation of promotion. They announced a ‘complete shutdown program’ in all academic and administrative activities of the university from last Monday. At the same time Vice-Chancellor Taufiq Alam was declared undesirable and demanded his removal. This has created deadlock in the university for four days.

Today at noon, Vice Chancellor Taufiq Alam came and brought a mason from outside and broke the locks of all the offices of the administrative building. In this, the administration officials and employees appeared in the office, but the university’s activities did not slow down. In the meantime, the Ministry of Education appointed Professor Mamun Or Rashid as the new Vice-Chancellor.
On the condition of anonymity, at least three protesting teachers told Prothom Alo that they have learned about the appointment of a new vice-chancellor after the removal of vice-chancellor Taufiq Alam. However, it will not affect the ongoing movement. Their shutdown program will continue to collect demands. Because, they have been fighting for a long time with just demands.
The present vice-chancellor Mohammad Taufiq Alam called several times to get his response, but he did not respond. University registrar Humayun Kabir told Prothom Alo that Mamun Or Rashid has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor. It is not yet confirmed when he will join.
