Bangladesh to Send Delegation to Qatar Following Death of Former Emir Sheikh Hamad

A high-level Bangladeshi delegation led by Speaker of Parliament Hafizuddin Ahmad is scheduled to depart for Doha on Tuesday to offer official condolences following the death of Qatar’s former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The mission aims to express solidarity with the Qatari royal family and the people of Qatar on behalf of the Bangladeshi government.

In recognition of the late leader’s passing, the government of Bangladesh has declared a half-day of national mourning to be observed this Thursday, July 16. The announcement was confirmed by Minister of Local Government Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as outlined in a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Alamgir formally visited the Qatari embassy in Gulshan on Monday to sign the book of condolence. During his visit, the minister expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the Bangladeshi government and its citizens, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to the deep-rooted, fraternal ties shared with Qatar. He was accompanied by Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister’s advisor on foreign affairs.

Prime Minister Tareq Rahman also extended his formal sympathies to the current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is the son of the deceased leader. In his message, the Prime Minister conveyed his deep shock and offered sincere condolences to the royal family and the government of Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away on Sunday, ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013. Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, he is credited with spearheading the country’s rapid economic expansion and transformation into a global energy powerhouse.
