Bangladesh Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert as Flood Situation Persists in Seven Districts

Persistent monsoon rains show no signs of abating as the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued a fresh warning Sunday for heavy to extreme rainfall across six divisions over the next 24 hours. The bulletin, released at midday by meteorologist Md. Hafizur Rahman, cautioned that the intense precipitation is expected to strike Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet.
Meteorological officials define heavy rainfall as 44 to 88 millimeters of accumulation within a 24-hour period, with anything exceeding that threshold categorized as extreme. These downpours, driven by active monsoon winds that were initially triggered by a low-pressure system, have already left major urban centers struggling to cope.

In the capital, Dhaka, 76 millimeters of rain fell between midnight Saturday and Sunday morning, while Chittagong recorded a staggering 129 millimeters during the same period. The deluge has submerged streets in both cities, disrupting daily life and complicating traffic flow.
The relentless weather has exacerbated an unfolding humanitarian crisis, with flood conditions now reported in seven districts across the country. According to data from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, water levels at five stations across three major rivers—the Sangu in Bandarban, the Kushiyara in Sylhet, and the Someshwari in Netrokona—have surged beyond their respective danger marks.
