Clash over unpaid debt leaves one dead and thirty injured in Brahmanbaria

A violent clash between residents of two villages in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila left one man dead and at least 30 others injured on Sunday night. The confrontation, sparked by a long-standing dispute over outstanding payments, paralyzed the area for several hours.
The violence erupted in the Kalikachha Bazar area at approximately 7:30 p.m. and continued until 10:30 p.m., involving residents from the villages of Suryakandi and Dharmatirtha. According to local witnesses, the conflict resulted in the vandalism and looting of at least ten businesses within the market, while traffic on the Sarail-Nasirnagar-Lakhai regional highway was brought to a complete standstill.

The victim, 55-year-old Hadim Mia, was identified as a resident of Dharmatirtha village. Police and local sources reported that the tension originated from an unpaid debt dating back 18 months. Hadim Mia had reportedly sold fishing equipment to a Suryakandi resident named Mosharraf Hossain on credit, and the failure to settle the balance triggered a heated verbal altercation on Sunday evening.
The dispute quickly escalated into a physical confrontation as supporters from both villages armed themselves with sticks, blades, spears, and bricks. During the ensuing melee, Hadim Mia was fatally struck by a spear.

Officers from the Sarail Police Station arrived at the scene and managed to bring the situation under control by 10:30 p.m. Sarail Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Monjur Kader Bhuiyan confirmed that the situation had stabilized by late Sunday night. The victim’s body was taken into police custody, and authorities have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
