Bangladesh High Court Rejects Petition for Men’s Protection Law

The High Court of Bangladesh has dismissed a writ petition seeking the enactment of a new law, titled the “Prevention and Suppression of Repression Against Men Act,” which aimed to protect men from alleged harassment under the existing Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Dowry Prohibition Act. A High Court bench consisting of Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury issued the order on Thursday following a hearing on the matter.
The petition was filed last May by Supreme Court lawyer Kazi Eliasur Rahman and Md. Khalilur Rahman, both associated with the Butterfly Human Rights Foundation. During the proceedings, petitioner Kazi Eliasur Rahman represented his own case, while Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman and Deputy Attorney General Md. Jasidul Islam Jony represented the state.
The petitioners had sought a judicial declaration that the state’s failure to introduce new legislation to protect men from the misuse of existing laws was legally invalid. The plea requested that the court mandate the government to draft the proposed law to ensure legal safeguards against what they described as unnecessary harassment of men. The petition named the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, the Law Secretary, and the Chairman of the Law Commission as respondents.
Following the court’s ruling, Kazi Eliasur Rahman confirmed the dismissal and indicated that the petitioners intend to challenge the order by filing an appeal with the Appellate Division.
