Bangladesh dengue death toll hits 50 as seasonal infections surge

Bangladesh has recorded 50 dengue-related deaths so far this year, with three additional fatalities confirmed over the past 24 hours. According to health officials, the latest deaths occurred across the Barishal, Mymensingh, and Dhaka divisions, marking the fifth consecutive day the country has reported casualties linked to the Aedes mosquito-borne disease.
The Directorate General of Health Services reported that 534 new patients were admitted to hospitals between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. This brings the total number of dengue hospitalizations in 2024 to 14,690.
A geographic analysis of the latest cases shows that the Dhaka division accounted for the highest number of new admissions, with 131 patients reported in areas outside the capital’s two main city corporations, while the city corporation areas recorded 121 additional cases.
The mortality toll has intensified as the year progressed, with 32 deaths occurring in July alone, compared to 13 in June, one in May, and two each in January and February. Regionally, the Dhaka city corporation areas have been the hardest hit, accounting for 22 of the total deaths, followed by six each in Barishal, Mymensingh, and Khulna.
Dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh traditionally peak during the monsoon season, typically lasting from July through October, as accumulated rainwater provides a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes. However, health experts note that the traditional seasonal pattern is shifting due to rapid urbanization, prolonged periods of warmth, and erratic weather patterns. These environmental changes have led to earlier infection surges and extended transmission periods, complicating efforts to contain the virus.
