Bangladesh approves three new upazilas and one police station in administrative expansion

The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) has approved the formation of three new sub-districts and one additional police station to enhance administrative efficiency. The decision was finalized during the committee’s 121st meeting, held Wednesday at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tareq Rahman.

The newly approved sub-districts include “Fatickchhari North” in Chittagong, “Bangara” in Comilla, and “South Gafargaon” in Mymensingh. Additionally, the committee authorized the establishment of “Halda” police station in Chittagong.

According to Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Hasan Shiplu, the restructuring of these regions is intended to streamline local governance. Under the approved proposal, Fatickchhari North will be carved out of six unions from the existing Fatickchhari sub-district, while the Bangara sub-district will be created by dividing the Muradnagar sub-district in Comilla. South Gafargaon will be formed from eight unions currently under the Pagla police station in Mymensingh, and the Halda police station will be established by bifurcating the Hathazari police station in Chittagong.

The committee also reached a significant decision regarding urban planning, mandating that the portions of the Eastern New Town Project under the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) located within the Narayanganj and Gazipur districts be officially brought under the jurisdiction of Dhaka district.

The meeting was attended by several senior cabinet members and officials, including Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman, Road Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Housing Minister Zakaria Taher, and State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Goni, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary A B M Abdus Sattar, and secretaries of relevant ministries were also present.
