Political party official arrested on drug charges in Gaibandha

Police in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila arrested a local leader of the Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP) late Sunday night on charges of narcotics possession. The suspect, 26-year-old Shakil Khan, was apprehended by authorities during an anti-drug operation near the Jobeda Filling Station in Dharmapur Bazar at approximately 1:00 a.m.

According to Sub-Inspector Selim Reza of the Kanchibari police investigation center, officers discovered eight yaba tablets concealed in a plastic bag within Khan’s pocket during a search. Following the arrest, police filed a formal case against the suspect under the Narcotics Control Act. Khan was subsequently transferred to the district jail by court order on Monday afternoon.

The suspect, a resident of West Sicha village in Chandipur union, previously served as the joint organizing secretary of the NCP’s Sundarganj upazila branch. Following the incident, the party leadership moved swiftly to sever ties with him.

Khademul Islam, the convener of the Gaibandha district NCP unit, confirmed the expulsion. A formal press release issued by the party, signed by senior joint convener Rashedul Islam, stated that Khan was removed from all organizational responsibilities and stripped of his primary membership due to confirmed involvement in antisocial activities and violations of party discipline.

The statement emphasized that Khan’s actions had severely damaged the party’s reputation and standing. The NCP has since advised its members and the general public to refrain from maintaining any organizational communication with the former official.
