Arrested Awami League Leader Chants Party Slogans While Being Transported to Court

A former leader of the Awami League in Natore, Bangladesh, drew public attention on Monday after chanting party slogans while being transported from the Gurudaspur Police Station to court. Rezaul Karim, the former joint general secretary of the Gurudaspur municipality unit, was filmed shouting slogans in support of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as he was being escorted into a prison van.
The incident, captured in a video circulating widely on social media, shows Karim shouting phrases such as “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile” and “I do not fear death in the memory of Bangabandhu” as he exited the station at approximately 1:00 p.m. Alongside other detainees, Karim also vocalized protests against what he described as “false cases,” while onlookers and the families of the detainees gathered near the police station gates.

Family members of the detainees present at the scene defended the individuals, asserting that the arrests were politically motivated. They maintained that those in custody had not been involved in any acts of sabotage, violence, or criminal activity, claiming instead that they were being targeted solely for their political affiliation and support for the former leadership.
Karim was arrested late Sunday night at his residence in the Chanchkoir Kachharipara area in connection with a case filed under the Explosives and Sabotage Act. When questioned about the incident, Gurudaspur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manjurul Alam stated that he was not present when the detainees were being moved to the transport vehicle. He noted that he was unaware of the specific slogans chanted by the prisoners and indicated that the department would investigate the matter.
