Army takes Brigadier General Miftah Uddin into custody following human rights charges

Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed has been taken into military custody, according to a confirmation provided by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate late Monday. Officials stated that he is currently being held under military jurisdiction, and formal legal proceedings will follow in accordance with established regulations.
The move follows the filing of formal charges at the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday in connection with the 2018 killing of Teknaf municipal councilor Ekramul Haque. The prosecution has named 11 individuals as defendants in the case, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Brigadier General Ahmed, who served as the commander of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 in Chittagong at the time of the incident, is among those accused.

Ekramul Haque, who had served as the Teknaf upazila president of the now-banned Jubo League for 12 years, was killed on the night of May 26, 2018. Authorities at the time characterized his death as the result of a “gunfight,” a claim that has since become the focal point of the legal proceedings currently before the tribunal.
