Armed Robbers Posing as Police Loot Cash and Gold in Cox’s Bazar Home Invasion

A gang of armed robbers posing as police officers staged a violent home invasion in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar, early Monday, making off with 16 bhori of gold jewelry and 840,000 taka in cash.

The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. at the residence of Rezaul Karim, an administrative officer for the Matarbari Union Parishad in Moheshkhali, located in the Abdul Hamid Sikdarpara village. According to Karim, the perpetrators arrived in a vehicle and initially approached him while he was socializing with neighbors at a local grocery store. Identifying themselves as law enforcement, the men seized mobile phones and cash from him and his associates before forcing Karim to lead them to his home under the guise of an official investigation.

Upon entering the residence, the suspects revealed their true intentions by holding Karim at gunpoint. Armed with firearms and sharp weapons, the assailants quickly moved to secure the entire household, including women and children.

The robbers first raided the room of Karim’s brother, an expatriate, where they assaulted his wife before stripping her of her gold jewelry. They subsequently forced open a wardrobe, stealing approximately 7.5 bhori of gold and 250,000 taka in cash. A separate group of the intruders entered Karim’s bedroom, where they threatened his wife at gunpoint to gain access to their personal safe. From there, they seized an additional 8.5 bhori of gold and 590,000 taka.

Before fleeing, the gang disabled the home’s security system by removing the hard drive from the CCTV unit. They locked the victims inside the house from the outside to ensure their escape.

Mohammad Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of the Pekua Police Station, confirmed that a team has inspected the crime scene. While the suspects claimed to be police officers, the official noted that they were not wearing uniforms. Authorities have launched an investigation into the robbery and have pledged to pursue legal action against those responsible.
