All those who fell into the ditch in Daudkandi were paddy workers who were going by truck to reduce costs

Relatives said that the injured workers were going in search of work in the truck to reduce expenses when the truck loaded with cargo fell into a ditch in Daudkandi Upazila of Comilla. Relatives of some of the victims reported this information to the police on Tuesday morning.

Earlier, seven laborers were killed and six others injured in an accident on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the Hasanpur area of ​​the upazila at around 3:30 a.m. on Monday. All of them are Boro paddy harvesting workers, said the police.

Those killed in this accident are Abzal Hossain (35), Sohrab Hossain (40), Abu Salek (42) of Khalipur village in Nawabganj Upazila of Dinajpur; Sumon Mia (21), Bishu Mia (34), Abu Hossain (29) and Abdur Rashid (58) of Bhaighar village of Birampur upazila. All their homes are in Dinajpur. Their bodies were recovered and kept at Daudkandi Highway Police Station.

The injured are Amir Ali (45), Tariqul Islam (50), Jalal Hossain (37), Md. Aminul Islam (38) and Jahangir Alam (40). They were first treated at Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex. Later, when the condition worsened, he was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at night. Apart from this, the police could not give detailed information about another injured person.

The doctor of Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex told Nayan De Prothom Alo that the condition of five injured people is critical.

According to the police, 13 workers were going towards Noakhali in a loaded truck from Dinajpur. In order to reduce the fare, they travel by sitting on the truck. Seven people were killed on the spot when the truck lost control and fell into a roadside ditch.

Jasim Uddin, the brother-in-law of the deceased Sohrab Hossain, came to Daudkandi Highway police station in the morning and said that all the victims were rice harvesters. Among them Sohrab is his (Jasim Uddin) wife’s elder brother. They were going to Noakhali for work. Sohrab was the sole earner in the family.

Meanwhile, Daudkandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nashreen Akhtar and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Redwan Islam visited the spot this morning. At that time, the administration announced financial assistance of 25,000 taka to each family of the deceased and 15,000 taka to the families of the injured.
