AI-manipulated photo of rival football fan sparks legal complaint in Bangladesh

A local political activist in Jashore’s Keshabpur has filed a formal police complaint after his image was digitally altered using artificial intelligence to depict him wearing the jersey of his rival national football team.
Ahidur Rahman, a joint convener of the local Upazila Chhatra Dal, submitted the complaint to Keshabpur police on Monday. He alleges that a Facebook page operated under the name “Russell Babu” repeatedly published manipulated photos showing him wearing a Brazil jersey. Rahman, who is an ardent supporter of the Argentine national team, contends that the images were created to deliberately undermine his reputation and portray him as a supporter of the rival team.

According to Rahman, the unauthorized digital manipulation has caused him significant distress and social embarrassment. He has formally requested that authorities invoke the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act to hold the perpetrator accountable for defamation and the misuse of his digital likeness.
Keshabpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Roksana Khatun confirmed receipt of the complaint, stating that an investigation is currently underway. She noted that legal action will be taken against the accused if the allegations of malicious intent are substantiated.

When contacted regarding the accusations, the account holder, Russell Babu, dismissed the gravity of the situation. He identified himself as Rahman’s nephew and characterized the incident as trivial. However, Rahman maintained that the personal relationship does not mitigate the offense, emphasizing that the digital alteration has damaged his social standing and remains unacceptable.
