Awami League Leader’s House Vandalized and Looted in Gazipur; Local BNP Condemns Attack

KALIAKAIR (GAZIPUR) — A violent mob numbering between 25 and 30 individuals launched a coordinated attack on the residence of a local Awami League politician in the Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the home of Emdad Hossain Tula, the former General Secretary of the Madhyapara Union Awami League.

The attackers, armed with locally made sharp weapons (ramdas), axes, and wooden sticks, forced their way into the property, heavily damaging interior furnishings and allegedly looting cash and valuables.

Narrow Escape for Family Members

According to eyewitnesses and family sources, no male members of the household were present when the armed group descended upon the residence. Sensing the imminent danger, Emdad’s wife, Nargis Begum, along with their two daughters-in-law, managed to flee the house through a back exit just as the mob breached the front entry.

Emdad’s son, Tarun, stated that the mob systematically ransacked eight rooms across the ground and first floors of the building. “The attackers shattered four large cupboards and eight wardrobes. They looted seven to eight lakh Taka in cash and approximately 15 to 16 bhoris (loads) of gold ornaments,” Tarun alleged.

The siege only ended when family members managed to sound an alarm using the loudspeaker of a nearby madrasa mosque. As local residents began gathering in response to the announcement, the assailants panicked, abandoning several of their weapons on the premises before fleeing the area.

Political Finger-Pointing and Rejection

The victims identified the leader of the mob as Tushar Imran, an individual reportedly operating under the banner of an organization named ‘Zia Manch’. The incident has triggered sharp rebukes from mainstream political organizers.

“Tushar has been committing various misdeeds while falsely using the name of Zia Manch. We strongly condemn this attack. The BNP will not take responsibility for such lawless activities, and I demand his immediate arrest.”

Reinforcing this stance, Anwar Hossain, the Member Secretary of the Upazila BNP, clarified the party’s structural position: “Zia Manch is not an official affiliate or organ of the BNP. Our party bears no responsibility for their misdeeds. Anyone committing these criminal acts must face the full force of the law.”

Accused Denies Involvement

When contacted, the primary accused, Tushar Ahmed, rejected the allegations entirely, claiming the incident was staged. “I know absolutely nothing about this attack. A few days ago, Emdad Hossain’s two sons and their accomplices attacked and vandalized my personal office. Now, they are destroying their own house just to shift the blame onto me,” Tushar countered.

Police Investigation

Law enforcement arrived at the scene shortly after the mob retreated, alerted by an emergency call.

“We dispatched a team to the spot immediately after receiving a call on the 999 national emergency hotline,” confirmed Shamim Akhter, the Officer-in-Charge of the Mouchak Police Outpost. “While our officers have secured the area and collected initial evidence, we have not yet received a formal written complaint from the affected family. Once a proper case is filed, we will initiate a thorough investigation and take necessary legal action.”
