Health Minister Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. Md. Azizur Rahman has defended the government’s decision to revoke the license of Ad-Din Hospital in Dhaka’s Moghbazar following the deaths of six newborns at the facility. Speaking at an event in Narsingdi’s Monohardi sub-district on Saturday, the minister rejected allegations of bias and asserted that the hospital had attempted to influence his decision through bribery.

Dr. Rahman stated that the hospital authorities had repeatedly attempted to bribe him with large sums of money to avoid punitive action. He credited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing full political backing to pursue the matter, emphasizing that the closure serves as a stern warning to the private healthcare sector across Bangladesh.

Addressing criticism from Jamaat-e-Islami regarding the license revocation, the minister dismissed claims that the government’s actions were unjust. He argued that the loss of six lives necessitated firm accountability, asserting that this measure would serve as a deterrent to improve standards in private medical facilities nationwide.

During the event, where financial grants were distributed among low-income residents of the Monohardi-Belabo constituency, the health minister underscored the government’s commitment to transparency and anti-corruption measures. He highlighted that the current administration is operating under strict directives to ensure that public services are delivered without the need for illicit payments.

Looking toward the future of the nation’s healthcare infrastructure, the minister outlined plans to introduce a community-based piloting scheme. This initiative intends to provide primary medical services directly to households, ensuring that patients are only referred to hospitals when clinically necessary. Furthermore, he announced that the government is collaborating with China to construct two specialized hospitals with a combined capacity of 3,000 beds, specifically focused on enhancing pediatric and maternal healthcare.
