A Chhatra Dal leader named Shahriar Ahmed (23) who was seriously injured in an attack by miscreants in Mirsrai, Chittagong died on Thursday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College. He was the organizing secretary of Union Chhatra Dal and a student of Heako Banani Degree College, Fatikchari. Last Saturday night, another party of the local BNP hacked him in Bhabani area of the upazila and seriously injured him due to the cow trade conflict. Youth Dal worker with him at that time. Shahriar’s father Abdul Alim is also active in BNP politics. His son was attacked mainly because of a dispute with him.
Shahriar’s father Abdul Alim told Prothom Alo that he returned home after an arbitration meeting at Zorarganj police station on Saturday at around 11 pm. At that time local cow trader Abdur Rahim called him on the mobile phone and asked him to go to Bhavani area. Abdur Rahim told him that some cattle traders in that area have stopped his two pickup cows. He requested Abdul Alim to go and settle the matter. Later Abdul Alim sent his son Shahriar to that area. Md. Sabuj was already in the area.
Abdul Alim alleged that as soon as Shahriar went to the area, BNP worker Sirajul Islam and his associates started attacking them. Shahriar was found seriously injured in an abandoned house in Mohammadpur area of Tantmara Union of Fatikchari Upazila around 3:30 pm on Saturday. Later he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. And Md. Sabuj was found on the side of the road in Coal Market area the next afternoon. His teeth were knocked out and his arm was cut.
Abdul Alim told Prothom Alo, Sirajul Islam of Badh Bhawani area is involved in cattle smuggling from India on the border route. I had a dispute with him about this because of the interruption. Sirajul targeted me and my son. I want justice for this incident.
When asked to know, member secretary (suspended committee) of Kererhat Union BNP Yasin Mizan said, Sirajul Islam does not have a party position now as all the union level committees including upazila are suspended. A few days ago, when there was a party meeting regarding various local problems including illegal business, Sirajul Islam and Abdul Alim got into a heated argument. We solve it immediately. If Sirajul Islam is involved in Shahriar’s murder, legal action should be taken against him. We want proper justice for this murder.
Sirajul Islam left the area immediately after the incident. Because of this, his statement was not available. When asked to know, Zorarganj police station officer-in-charge Kazi Nazmul Haque said that a case was filed on the night of April 22. It will be converted into a murder case after Shahriar’s death. Police are working to arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, after the news of Shahriar’s death spread, the leaders and activists of BNP and allied organizations blocked the road in Baryarhat-Khagrachari road area to arrest the people involved in the incident. This program was celebrated in the coal market area around 1.30 pm today. Later, when the police assured them, they left the road.
