Measles symptoms claim five more lives in Bangladesh as total death toll reaches 943

Five more people have died from measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported on Tuesday.

The latest fatalities, recorded between 8:00 a.m. Monday and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, bring the total death toll associated with the outbreak to 943 since March 15. This figure includes 844 deaths attributed to measles-like symptoms and 99 confirmed cases of the virus.

According to the DGHS report, four of the latest deaths occurred within the Dhaka division, while one was recorded in the Sylhet division. No new deaths were confirmed as laboratory-verified measles during this 24-hour period.

Epidemiologists noted that while measles can affect individuals of any age, children remain the most vulnerable demographic. Health authorities consider all deaths involving measles-like symptoms during an active outbreak as measles-related.

Data from the DGHS indicates that 986 new cases of measles-like symptoms were identified across the country in the past day, bringing the cumulative total since March 15 to 151,638. Additionally, 91 new cases of confirmed measles were detected, raising the total number of confirmed infections to 18,578.

Hospitalization records show that 132,554 patients have been admitted for measles-like symptoms since March 15. Of these, 127,811 individuals have since recovered and been discharged from medical facilities. The government’s health reports do not currently provide a breakdown of these statistics by age group.
