Measles Symptoms Claim Seven More Lives in Bangladesh as Total Death Toll Reaches 950

Seven more people have died from measles-like symptoms in the country, bringing the total death toll since March 15 to 950, according to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released on Wednesday.

The deaths occurred between 8:00 a.m. Tuesday and 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. Of the 950 total fatalities, 851 individuals died exhibiting symptoms associated with measles, while 99 deaths have been laboratory-confirmed as measles cases. Health officials currently categorize all deaths involving measles-like symptoms during this outbreak as measles-related fatalities.

Epidemiologists noted that while the disease can affect individuals of any age, children remain the most vulnerable demographic. The DGHS report did not provide a breakdown of the fatalities by age.

Regarding regional distribution, the latest casualties included four individuals from the Dhaka division, two from Barisal, and one from Sylhet. No deaths were confirmed as measles-positive within the last 24-hour reporting period.

Data indicates a continued spread of the illness, with 1,098 new cases exhibiting measles-like symptoms reported nationwide over the past 24 hours. Since March 15, the cumulative number of patients presenting with such symptoms has reached 152,736. Additionally, 73 new laboratory-confirmed cases were identified in the last day, raising the national total of confirmed cases to 18,651 since the outbreak began in mid-March.

Medical facilities have admitted 133,573 patients for measles-related symptoms during this period. According to the health directorate, 128,765 patients have since recovered and been discharged from hospitals.
