Vijay Sethupathi ends cameo roles with sole exception for Rajinikanth in Jailer 2

Renowned Indian actor Vijay Sethupathi has announced a definitive end to his participation in cameo roles, citing the potential impact such appearances have on his career as a lead actor. However, the acclaimed star confirmed that he has made a singular exception for the highly anticipated sequel, “Jailer 2,” out of deep personal respect for veteran superstar Rajinikanth.

During a recent interview with host Gopinath, Sethupathi explained that while he has shuttered his involvement in minor film roles, the project helmed by director Nelson Dilipkumar remains an outlier. He noted that when smaller productions leverage his image for marketing and poster campaigns, it often inadvertently overshadows his own lead projects and creates confusion among his audience. Conversely, he observed that in a film of “Jailer 2’s” magnitude, the audience’s attention remains firmly fixed on Rajinikanth, regardless of his own inclusion.

“Jailer 2,” which serves as the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster, is scheduled for theatrical release on October 15, 2026. The film will see Rajinikanth reprise his iconic role as Muthuvel Pandian. The star-studded production boasts an expansive cast including Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Beyond Sethupathi, the film features a high-profile lineup of guest appearances, including Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Hrithik Roshan.

Sethupathi, who was most recently seen in the silent film “Gandhi Talks,” directed by Kishor Pandurang Belekar, has maintained a selective approach to his filmography. Following its world premiere at the 2023 International Film Festival of India, his previous project saw a theatrical release in January 2026. This latest declaration signals a strategic shift for the actor, prioritizing his primary roles while reserving special appearances exclusively for industry legends.
