Tamannaah Bhatia labels South Indian film industry as patriarchal compared to Bollywood

South Indian cinema icon Tamannaah Bhatia has characterized the regional film industry as “somewhat patriarchal,” sparking a fresh debate on the structural differences between Tollywood and Bollywood. With a career spanning nearly two decades, the actress shared her candid observations during a recent media interview, noting that while she appreciates the focus on star power in the south, the prevailing perspective toward female performers remains far from ideal.
Bhatia, who established herself as a leading name in South Indian cinema after her Hindi film debut, suggested that the industry’s commercial framework often limits the scope for women. She described the regional approach as having a distinct viewpoint that does not always translate into positive or appreciative portrayals of female characters. Despite these critiques, she acknowledged that she adapted to the industry’s reliance on musical spectacle and the heavy emphasis on the “larger-than-life” presence required to achieve commercial success.
In contrast, the actress argued that Bollywood offers a more diverse landscape for talent. She noted that the Hindi film industry creates a wider space for both arthouse-leaning actors and those who thrive in commercial, high-glamour productions. According to Bhatia, the true superstars in Bollywood are those who demonstrate the versatility to oscillate between performance-driven narratives and traditional song-and-dance sequences.
While emphasizing that these are her personal observations born from years of experience, Bhatia acknowledged that the journey for any actress who has maintained a decade-long career is rarely uniform. She maintained that longevity in the industry is ultimately defined by an artist’s ability to balance artistic credibility with the demands of mainstream commercial cinema.
Bhatia is currently preparing for the release of her latest project, “Viban: Force of the Forest.” Directed by Deepak Mishra, the film features an ensemble cast including Sidharth Malhotra, Manish Paul, Sunil Grover, and Shweta Tiwari. The production is scheduled to hit theaters on August 26.
