Behind the Casting Switch: How Priyanka Sarkar Replaced Subhashree Ganguly in Chirodini Tumi Je Amar

The superhit Tollywood film Chirodini Tumi Je Amar holds a special place in the hearts of Bengali moviegoers. Directed by Raj Chakraborty and produced by SVF, this iconic film successfully launched the lead pair—Rahul Arunoday Bandopadhyay and Priyanka Sarkar—from television into big-screen stardom.
However, in a past interview, the late actor Rahul Bandopadhyay revealed that Priyanka was not the director’s first choice for the film.
The Height and “Look” Dilemma
Director Raj Chakraborty had initially selected actress Subhashree Ganguly to play the female lead opposite Rahul.
The casting took an unexpected turn after Rahul cleared his audition. When analyzing the onscreen pairing, Raj Chakraborty felt that their physical attributes did not align with the characters’ backgrounds.
- The Problem: Subhashree was relatively tall and broad, whereas Rahul had a shorter, slighter frame.
- The Character Context: The director worried that a tall heroine wouldn’t look visually convincing opposite Rahul, who was playing a working-class mechanic, while she was portraying a young student.
“It wasn’t that Subhashree was disliked; everyone liked her very much. But our looks simply didn’t match well together for those specific roles,” Rahul had shared.
The Audition and the Heroine Swap
Seeking an alternative, Raj Chakraborty asked Rahul if he knew any other actresses who might fit the bill. At the time, Rahul was working on a mega-serial alongside Priyanka Sarkar. He encouraged Priyanka to audition, and she instantly impressed the production team.
To resolve the situation smoothly, SVF producers Srikanth Mohta and Mahendra Soni executed a clever heroine swap between two of their major projects:
- Priyanka Sarkar, who was originally slated to debut in the movie Baazigar (or Baazimaat), was moved to Chirodini Tumi Je Amar.
- Subhashree Ganguly was subsequently launched as the lead actress in Baazimat opposite Soham Chakraborty.
Coincidentally, years later, Subhashree Ganguly went on to marry the film’s director, Raj Chakraborty.
Off-Screen Romance and a Tragic End
The onscreen chemistry between Rahul and Priyanka in Chirodini Tumi Je Amar translated into real life. Following the film’s massive box-office success, the duo fell in love and tied the knot, later welcoming their son, Sahaj. Although the couple went through a highly publicized separation, they eventually reunited for the sake of their son.
Tragedy struck the family later when Rahul passed away in a drowning accident on March 29 while shooting for the serial Bholebaba Par Karega… in Talsari. Following his untimely demise, Priyanka Sarkar filed an FIR and lodged a formal complaint with the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists’ Forum against the production house, alleging severe mismanagement and negligence at the shooting location. Legal proceedings and forum reviews regarding the incident remain pending.
