Bangladesh Film Artistes Association Holds Biennial Leadership Election

The Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) transformed into a hub of activity on Friday as members of the film industry gathered to elect the new leadership for the Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association for the 2026-2028 term. The polling process, which saw a robust turnout of candidates and supporters, commenced in the morning and is scheduled to conclude at 6:00 p.m., following a brief midday break for lunch and prayers.

A total of 573 registered voters are casting their ballots to determine the association’s future executive committee. Election officials have implemented comprehensive security and logistical measures to ensure the voting process proceeds in a peaceful and orderly environment. Overseeing the proceedings is Chief Election Commissioner Khorshed Alam Khasru, who is supported by commissioners Kamal Md. Kibria Lipu and B.H. Nisha.

The election features a high-stakes contest between two primary panels. One group is spearheaded by presidential candidate Shiba Shanu and general secretary candidate Joy Chowdhury. Their challenge comes from a competing panel led by Arman and Romana Islam Mukti. Notably, this election marks a transition for the association, as the outgoing president and general secretary, Misha Sawdagor and Monowar Hossain Dipjol, are not seeking re-election to any positions.

The composition of the two panels highlights a wide array of veteran and contemporary industry figures. The Shiba Shanu-Joy Chowdhury slate includes Rozina and D.A. Tayeb for vice-president, Subrata for assistant general secretary, Sony Rahman for organizational secretary, Poly for international affairs, Jacky Alamgir for office and publicity, Mosafkul Jamil Kakon for cultural and sports secretary, and Jadu Azad for treasurer.

Facing them, the Arman-Mukti panel has fielded Nutan and Elias Kobra for vice-president, Rina Khan for assistant general secretary, Chunnu for organizational secretary, M.A. Parvez Chowdhury Abir for international affairs, Russell Mia for office and publicity, Maruf Akib for cultural and sports secretary, and Komol for the position of treasurer. The results are expected to set the organizational trajectory for the country’s film community over the next two years.
