Actress Kazi Nawshaba Ahmed explores themes of mortality and nature in new short film Paint on Dry Leaf

Popular Bangladeshi actress Kazi Nawshaba Ahmed has returned to the spotlight with the release of the short film “Paint on Dry Leaf.” The film, which has garnered attention for its unique narrative and thematic depth, marks a significant milestone for the actress, who describes the project as a deeply personal artistic journey.

In a recent interview, Nawshaba explained that the film was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with director Fuaduzzaman Fuad. The actress noted that the production was handled with meticulous care, reflecting a long-term commitment from the entire team.

The film explores complex themes regarding human mortality, the fragility of life, and the deteriorating relationship between humanity and nature. Nawshaba remarked that the story resonated with her own perceptions of existence, noting that humans often live under the illusion of permanence while neglecting to value their environment or their connections with others.

Regarding her co-star, Imtiaz Barshan, Nawshaba praised his professionalism and their long-standing creative rapport, which dates back to her first, albeit unreleased, film project. She emphasized that the film’s success was largely due to the cohesion of an extraordinary team, which allowed them to complete production in a short timeframe following an extensive period of preparation.

Addressing a poignant line from the film, “There is no magical way to be immortal,” Nawshaba reflected on the human tendency to postpone affection and environmental responsibility. She argued that true immortality is achieved through love and the preservation of nature, rather than through physical presence.

Nawshaba highlighted the psychological intensity of “Paint on Dry Leaf,” comparing the film to a poem that offers different interpretations to every viewer. She noted that the production prioritized authenticity, braving extreme cold and natural fog during early morning shoots to capture the necessary atmosphere without relying on artificial effects or digital enhancement.

The actress concluded by stating that the project serves as a constant invitation for her as an artist to revisit and reinterpret the character, finding new meanings in the story’s exploration of life, death, and human connection.
