Mob attacks residence of student leader in Kushtia following football tournament dispute

A residence in the Kushlibasa village of Kushtia’s Kumarkhali Upazila was attacked and looted Tuesday night following a dispute over a local football tournament. The incident targeted the home of Mahidul Islam, where his nephew, Shimul Parvez, a joint general secretary of the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal’s Kushtia Government College unit, has resided for nine years.

According to local accounts and police reports, the conflict originated from an ongoing disagreement between organizers of a football tournament at the Kushlibasa Secondary School field and a group from the neighboring Chhaglapara area. The tournament was organized by Shimul Parvez and his associates. Tensions escalated on Tuesday afternoon when supporters of the Chhatra Dal leader allegedly assaulted a local man named Alam Sheikh.

Following that confrontation, an estimated mob of 150 to 200 individuals from Chhaglapara, allegedly led by Shahin Ali, Mitul, and Likhon Sheikh, converged on the residence at approximately 9:00 p.m. armed with locally made weapons.

The occupants of the house alleged that the attackers caused extensive property damage, smashed furniture, and destroyed electrical infrastructure. Family members reported the theft of 300,000 taka in cash, a laptop, a desktop computer, and six sacks of paddy, estimating the total financial loss at 500,000 taka. Ashia Khatun, the aunt of Shimul Parvez, stated that the family fled the premises in terror as the mob began their assault.

Shimul Parvez claimed the violence was a continuation of previous interference by the Chhaglapara group during the tournament’s preparatory matches. He stated his intention to file a formal police complaint. Conversely, residents of Chhaglapara, including Torab Ali, admitted to the property damage but denied allegations of looting. They claimed that the violence was a spontaneous reaction to the earlier assault on their associate.

Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin confirmed that police visited the scene on Tuesday night. He noted that the situation is currently under control and stated that authorities are awaiting a formal written complaint to initiate legal proceedings.
