Libya repatriates 174 Bangladeshi nationals from Tajura detention center

A total of 174 Bangladeshi nationals, who were previously held at the Tajura detention center in Libya, were repatriated to Bangladesh on Tuesday. The group arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 9:47 a.m. aboard a special Burak Air flight.
The repatriation process was facilitated through a joint initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, with significant support from the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Officials indicated that most of the returnees had entered Libya illegally, motivated by human traffickers with the intent of reaching Europe via perilous sea routes. Many of the repatriated citizens reported suffering from abduction, extortion, and physical abuse while detained in Libya.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare, and the IOM were present at the airport to receive the returnees. During the reception, Foreign Ministry representatives urged the citizens to share their harrowing experiences with their families and communities to help raise awareness regarding the extreme risks associated with illegal migration.
The IOM provided each returnee with financial assistance for transportation, emergency food supplies, primary medical care, and temporary housing where necessary.
Government officials confirmed that they continue to work in close coordination with the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and international agencies to ensure the safe repatriation of other Bangladeshi nationals currently held in various detention centers across Libya.
