Farmer suffers severed leg in brutal attack by relative in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila

A 36-year-old farmer suffered a brutal attack in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila on Monday evening, resulting in the amputation of his right leg. The victim, identified as Abu Soma, son of Abu Kashem Molla, was allegedly attacked by his cousin, Mamun Molla, following a dispute over the assailant’s history of substance abuse and domestic discord.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 p.m. near a government primary school adjacent to Goalpara Bazar. According to family members, Abu Soma was walking toward the school grounds to retrieve his son after finishing field work when he was intercepted by Mamun Molla. The attacker, who had reportedly been waiting for him, struck the victim multiple times with a sharp weapon, severing his right leg below the knee and inflicting severe wounds on his left leg.
The victim’s wife, Beauty Khatun, stated that the violence stemmed from the family’s long-standing attempts to intervene in Mamun Molla’s drug use and abusive behavior toward his own spouse. She alleged that these repeated confrontations had fueled deep-seated resentment in the suspect.
Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the altercation, prompting the suspect to flee. Abu Soma was initially transported to the Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. Dr. Fariha Tahsin, who attended to the patient in the emergency department, confirmed that the victim’s right leg was completely severed and his left leg sustained multiple deep lacerations. Given the critical nature of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka for specialized surgical care.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Asaduzzaman confirmed that the attack was motivated by family animosity. Authorities noted that the suspect has a prior criminal record, including an arrest related to a theft at a local shop. Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large.
