Cabinet Approves New Pay Scale for Government Employees

The Cabinet approved a new pay structure for government employees during a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, marking a significant shift in civil service compensation. A senior secretary who attended the meeting confirmed the approval, with the Cabinet Division scheduled to provide further details during a forthcoming press briefing.

The government’s decision follows a series of policy evaluations aimed at revising compensation for civil servants across all 20 existing grades. Previously, a 10-member committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani was formed on April 21 to oversee the implementation framework. That committee had recommended increasing basic salaries by up to 100 percent, proposing a phased rollout that would prioritize base pay adjustments in the first year, followed by revisions to housing and other allowances in the second year.

The move toward a new pay scale has been a stated priority for the current administration. The Prime Minister’s Office recently highlighted the initiative in an e-book titled “180 Days of the People’s Government,” which featured a dedicated section on the Ninth Pay Scale as a major development for government personnel.

Efforts to reform the salary structure gained momentum on July 27, 2025, when the interim government established the Ninth National Pay Commission. Led by former Finance Secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan, the 23-member commission submitted its formal report in January. That commission proposed increasing salaries and allowances by 100 to 140 percent while maintaining the current 20-grade structure. Its recommendations included raising the minimum basic salary from 8,250 taka to 20,000 taka, and increasing the maximum salary threshold from 78,000 taka to 160,000 taka.
