Madrasa Superintendent Fined for Attempting to Sell Government-Allocated Salt in Rajshahi

DURGAPUR, Rajshahi — A local madrasa superintendent was fined 50,000 taka by a mobile court on Thursday night after attempting to illicitly sell government-allocated salt intended for preserving hides from sacrificial animals.
The incident occurred at the Madinatul Uloom Qawmi Hafizia Madrasa and Kindergarten, located in the Palsha Natun Hat area of Durgapur Upazila. Local residents intercepted the institution’s superintendent, Jahid Hasan, as he was allegedly attempting to remove and sell 36 sacks of government-subsidized salt donated for the processing of Qurbani hides.
Following the discovery, local witnesses detained Hasan and alerted authorities. Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner for Land Laila Noor Tanju arrived at the scene and presided over a mobile court.
Under the provisions of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, Magistrate Tanju fined Hasan 50,000 taka, with a default sentence of one month in prison. As Hasan could not immediately pay the fine, he was initially taken into police custody. He was released after his family arrived at the station to pay the penalty.
The seized sacks of salt have been placed under lock and key at the madrasa premises. Magistrate Tanju stated that further administrative action regarding the recovered goods would be determined by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer.
