At least three buffaloes die and 25 fall ill after grazing on poisoned grass in Patuakhali Bauphal

At least 28 buffaloes fell ill and three died on Friday after consuming poisoned grass in Lalchar, located in the Bauphal Upazila of Patuakhali district. Local herdsmen and veterinary officials suspect that unidentified individuals deliberately applied toxins to the grazing fields, leading to the mass poisoning of the livestock.
The incident occurred during routine grazing sessions on the sediment-formed island of Lalchar, situated within the Tetulia River. According to buffalo owners, herdsmen had brought over 100 animals to the char for grazing when the animals began showing signs of severe distress. Three buffaloes, owned by Rofiz Mridha, Suman Majhi, and Ruhul Amin, succumbed to the suspected poisoning shortly after consuming the contaminated vegetation.
Upazila Assistant Livestock Officer Mohammad Shahidul Islam stated that medical teams were dispatched to the site to provide emergency treatment to the remaining affected animals. Officials have collected samples from the deceased buffaloes for laboratory analysis to confirm the nature of the toxins. A definitive report on the cause of death is expected following the completion of these tests.
Local farmers noted that Lalchar has served as a vital grazing ground for cattle and buffaloes for over a decade without prior incident. However, buffalo owner Mostafa Fakir, who has operated in the region for 15 years, alleged that the poisoning was an act of deliberate sabotage. Fakir reported that 18 of his own animals remain in critical condition.
Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Sirajul Islam confirmed that law enforcement officers have been deployed to the area to investigate the incident. Authorities stated that legal action will be initiated upon receipt of a formal written complaint.
