Local BNP leader sparks online debate after ribbon-cutting ceremony for makeshift bridge in Barguna

Barguna, Bangladesh — A makeshift bamboo and timber bridge constructed by local residents over a canal in the Dowatala Union of Bamna Upazila was officially inaugurated on Saturday, sparking widespread social media discussion. The ceremony, led by Dowatala Union BNP convener Rashed Khan Mamun, took place in the presence of local party activists.
The bridge, which spans approximately 40 feet, was built using funds collected by villagers to replace a dilapidated iron bridge that had collapsed into the canal, disrupting local transportation. Residents sought a solution after the previous structure was abandoned and fell into ruin.
Footage of the inauguration ceremony, showing Mamun cutting a red ribbon with party members standing behind him, went viral on Facebook. The event drew mixed reactions from the public, with some users questioning the necessity of a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for a temporary, small-scale structure. Critics labeled the display as performative, while others expressed appreciation for the initiative to address the immediate connectivity crisis.
Defending the ceremony, Rashed Khan Mamun stated that he contributed 5,000 taka toward the construction costs and commended the community for their proactive approach. He noted that the wooden bridge is intended only as a temporary measure, adding that Nurul Islam Moni, the government-party Chief Whip of the National Parliament, has promised that a permanent concrete bridge will be constructed at the site in the future.
This event marks the second instance in recent weeks where local BNP leaders have presided over the inauguration of resident-funded bridges. On August 6, Shahidul Islam Khan, the municipal president of the BNP in Wazirpur, Barishal, similarly inaugurated a community-built bridge, which also triggered significant debate across social media platforms.
