Clashes Erupt at Pallabi Bihari Camp Over Mortuary Construction Prompting Police Deployment

Clashes erupted between two opposing groups at a Bihari camp in the Pallabi area of the capital on Saturday afternoon, triggered by a dispute over the construction of a mortuary washing facility. The confrontation, which began around 4:00 p.m., involved chaotic exchanges, gunfire, and the detonation of crude bombs, prompting a heavy police deployment to the area.
According to police sources, tensions flared near a local mosque where construction of the mortuary facility was underway. A rival faction attempted to install a water pump at the same site, leading to initial skirmishes that escalated into a wider conflict. The unrest involved local political activists, with reports indicating that supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were drawn into the fray.
The confrontation pitted a group of approximately 50 to 60 individuals, allegedly led by a Jamaat activist identified as Manik, against a larger force of 200 to 250 people led by Chhatra Dal leader Sohel and a community leader named Sadakat Khan, also known as Fakku. Witnesses and police reports confirmed that at least five rounds were fired during the hostilities.
Surveillance footage captured during the incident shows a group of eight individuals on three motorcycles, all wearing helmets. Two of the riders are seen discharging firearms into the air as they pass through the area, causing bystanders to flee in panic.
Ashraful Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police for the Pallabi zone, confirmed late Saturday that tensions remain high in the area. Police are maintaining a presence at the scene to stabilize the situation. While authorities noted that several individuals sustained injuries during the clashes, officials stated that a comprehensive report regarding the casualties and the ongoing investigation will be released at a later time.
