BNP leader hospitalized following stabbing incident in Joypurhats Akkelpur over school committee dispute

A local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader was hospitalized after being attacked and stabbed in Akkelpur, Joypurhat, on Thursday night. Harunur Rashid, 55, who serves as the president of Ward 9 of the Rukindipur Union BNP, was intercepted by a group of individuals at the Rajkanda intersection on the Rowair-Rajkanda road around 10:00 p.m.
Rashid is currently receiving treatment at the Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex. According to medical staff, he sustained a significant laceration to his left arm, likely inflicted by a sharp weapon, and exhibits signs of physical trauma below his head.
The victim has accused the headmaster of Rowair Government Primary School, Azad-ur-Rahman, along with the headmaster’s brother, Daraz Uddin, and several others, of orchestrating the attack. Rashid alleged that the confrontation, which he characterized as an attempted murder, stems from a protracted dispute regarding the school’s managing committee. He indicated that he intends to file a formal police complaint.
Azad-ur-Rahman has categorically denied the allegations, labeling the incident a staged event. The headmaster claimed that on June 21, Rashid assaulted him with a shoe during a disagreement over the school committee, a matter for which the headmaster has already initiated a lawsuit. Rahman alleged that Rashid has been pressuring him to withdraw that case and threatening his employment, suggesting that these latest claims are an attempt to frame him.
Local police reports and accounts from the area indicate that tensions began following the school’s management committee elections on June 15. The headmaster maintains that Rashid demanded the inclusion of his preferred candidates in the committee, leading to the June 21 confrontation. Following that incident, Rahman filed a formal complaint at the local police station and subsequently initiated legal proceedings in court against Rashid and three others.
Arif Iftekhar Ahmed, general secretary of the Akkelpur Upazila BNP, expressed concern over the attack and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.
Akkelpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Reza confirmed that Aminur Islam, president of the Rukindipur Union BNP, visited the station on Friday morning to signal the party’s intent to file a case. Police authorities stated that they will launch a formal investigation once the written complaint is received.
