Fake doctor jailed and fined in Bogura for illegal medical practice

A mobile court in Bogra’s Sherpur upazila sentenced a 50-year-old man to seven days of simple imprisonment and fined him 100,000 taka on Thursday for practicing medicine without a recognized degree or professional certification.
Sunil Kumar Biswas was apprehended during a raid conducted by local authorities at his pharmacy, located in the Sanyalpara area along Hatkhola Road in Sherpur municipality. The operation was led by Sherpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Md. Saiduzzaman Himu. The raid was conducted in the presence of Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Amirul Islam, alongside officers from the Sherpur Police Station and members of the Ansar forces.
According to the office of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Biswas had been operating as a medical practitioner for an extended period despite lacking any legitimate medical credentials. He faced allegations of prescribing medications, recommending banned drugs, and performing surgical procedures. During the raid, authorities seized expired medicines, prohibited drugs, and various surgical instruments from his chamber.
The disciplinary action follows a complaint involving a five-year-old child, Osman Ali. According to the child’s family, they sought treatment from Biswas on August 24 for the child’s urinary pain and irritation. The family alleged that the child’s condition deteriorated significantly hours after the consultation, resulting in severe abdominal swelling and an inability to urinate. The child was subsequently rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra for emergency care.
The mobile court sentenced Biswas under the provisions of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010. Following the court’s order, Biswas paid the fine immediately. Sherpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Moinuddin confirmed that the convicted man was transferred to the Bogra district jail on Thursday night.
UNO Md. Saiduzzaman Himu stated that providing medical services and issuing prescriptions without valid degrees is strictly illegal. He emphasized that such enforcement operations will continue in the interest of public health and safety.
