Bangladesh to hold five tiers of local government elections this fiscal year with 60 billion taka budget allocation

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam announced on Tuesday that five tiers of local government elections will be held within the current fiscal year. The government has allocated 6 billion taka in the national budget to facilitate these polls.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat following a meeting with the Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh, Christian Brix Moller, the State Minister stated that a formal consultation with the Election Commission is scheduled for next week, pending approval from the Prime Minister. The Election Commission will be responsible for setting the election schedule and dates, after which the ministry will provide further briefings.
The meeting with the Danish Ambassador primarily focused on bilateral cooperation regarding water supply infrastructure. State Minister Alam noted that Denmark will assist in the third phase of the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant project. The project, estimated at a total cost of 16 billion taka, will receive 4.5 billion taka in support from Denmark, consisting of a 1.5 billion taka grant and a 3 billion taka loan to be repaid over 20 years. Once completed, the facility is expected to treat 950 million liters of water from the Meghna River daily.
In addition to infrastructure support, the State Minister confirmed that Denmark has pledged 1 billion taka in assistance for the Rohingya refugee response. The meeting was also attended by Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Abdul Moin Khan.
