Man fined for selling fox meat at Kamalnagar market in Lakshmipur

KAMALNAGAR, Lakshmipur — A 45-year-old man was apprehended and fined by a mobile court after he was caught publicly slaughtering a fox and attempting to sell its meat at a local market in Lakshmipur’s Kamalnagar Upazila.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Munshiganj Bazaar in the Char Martin area. According to witnesses, the suspect, identified as Md. Ibrahim, had trapped a fox in a net near the marketplace. He proceeded to slaughter the animal and displayed its severed head alongside the meat to prospective buyers. The public spectacle drew immediate outrage from local residents, who confronted Ibrahim and chased him from the scene.
Authorities took action on Tuesday night after video footage of the incident surfaced on social media, sparking widespread condemnation. Kamalnagar police located and detained Ibrahim, subsequently bringing him before a mobile court.
Presiding over the case, the mobile court imposed a fine of 5,000 taka on the accused. As Ibrahim was unable to pay the penalty, members of the local market committee intervened and raised the funds collectively to settle the fine.
Kamalnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faridul Alam confirmed the arrest, stating that Ibrahim was detained for the illegal slaughter and attempted sale of protected wildlife.
Md. Rahat Uz Zaman, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Kamalnagar, emphasized that under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, the unauthorized possession, sale, or commercial use of wildlife, including their meat or body parts, is strictly prohibited and constitutes a punishable offense.
