Tourist dies, another missing after drowning at Coxs Bazar beach

A tourist died and another remains missing after being swept away by strong currents while swimming at Sea-Gal Point on Cox’s Bazar beach on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Md. Yasin, while the missing individual is 23-year-old Ibrahim Khan. Both were residents of the Aftabnagar area in Dhaka and had arrived in the coastal district on Tuesday as part of a 10-member group.
According to local police and lifeguard officials, five members of the group entered the water at Sea-Gal Point around 2:15 p.m. Despite the deployment of red flags warning swimmers of dangerous conditions and the presence of hidden trenches along the shoreline, the group proceeded to swim. A powerful wave struck the swimmers, causing both men to disappear beneath the surface.
Imtiaz Ahmed, regional manager of the private Sea-Safe Lifeguard Station, stated that the Bay of Bengal is currently experiencing rough conditions. He noted that the coastline spanning from Sugandha Point through Sea-Gal Point to Laboni Point has developed several hazardous trenches due to environmental factors. Lifeguards launched an immediate rescue operation and recovered Yasin, who was rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Doctors at the facility pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Search operations for the missing tourist, Ibrahim Khan, continued throughout the afternoon. Despite efforts by rescue teams until 5:00 p.m., he could not be located.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, Sheikh Mohammad Ali, confirmed that the search remains ongoing despite the challenging sea conditions. The body of the deceased has been kept at the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue pending further procedures.
