Teenager dies while playing football years after losing father in political clash

A teenage boy from Panchagarh, who lost his father during a political clash four years ago, died suddenly on Sunday while playing football, leaving his mother in a state of profound shock and grief.
Abdullah Al Mahi, a tenth-grade student at Boda Government Pilot Model School and College, collapsed while playing with friends at the Pathraj Adarsha High School field in the late afternoon. He was rushed to the Boda Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead. Resident Medical Officer Md. Zahid Hasan confirmed that the boy was brought to the facility unresponsive after the incident on the field.
Mahi was the only son of Nasrin Akter, whose life has been marked by repeated tragedy. Her husband, Abdur Rashid Arefin, who served as the joint convener of the Maidandighi Union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), died on December 24, 2022, following a clash between police and protesters during a rally in the district town. Nasrin Akter had also lost her father just one month prior to her husband’s death, leaving Mahi as her sole emotional and familial support.
Relatives and neighbors gathered at the family home on Monday to mourn the loss. The boy’s uncle, Abul Kalam Azad, an attorney, expressed the family’s devastation, stating that Mahi had served as the embodiment of his late father. He noted that the family had dedicated their efforts to shielding the boy from the pain of his father’s absence, only to face this sudden loss.
Mahi was laid to rest at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in the Pathraj-Chandanpara area, interred beside his father’s grave. Local ward member Hafizul Islam stated that the entire community remains in mourning, struggling to process the sudden passing of the youth who had been his mother’s only hope for the future.
