Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected 24th President of Bangladesh as International Embassies Extend Congratulations

DHAKA — The French and Swiss embassies in Dhaka have extended official congratulations to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir following his election as the 24th President of Bangladesh.
The diplomatic missions issued statements via their respective verified social media channels on Thursday evening, joining the Chinese Embassy and the British High Commission, both of which had previously signaled their support for the newly elected head of state.
Mirza Fakhrul, representing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), secured the presidency after garnering 255 votes during the electoral process held on Thursday. The voting took place between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., with Chief Election Commissioner announcing the results at 5:20 p.m. Mirza Fakhrul’s primary challenger, Oli Ahmed—the candidate for an 11-party alliance—received 88 votes. The president-elect is scheduled to be sworn into office on Friday evening.
In its official statement, the French Embassy offered sincere congratulations to the president-elect, honoring his long-standing contributions as a veteran politician to the nation’s democratic journey. The embassy reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding bilateral ties and friendship between the two nations.
Similarly, the Swiss Embassy expressed its congratulations and indicated a readiness to further deepen the bilateral partnership between Switzerland and Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of their ongoing cooperation.
