Three Dhaka University students report harassment as student leaders injured in campus clash

Three female students from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University have filed a formal complaint following an incident of verbal harassment on campus. The complainants alleged that they were subjected to derogatory remarks by a group of outsiders near the Raju Memorial Sculpture at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Following the incident, members of the Chhatra Union reportedly confronted the perpetrators, leading to a physical altercation. The student organization claims that several of its leaders and activists, including Central General Secretary Shimul Kumbhakar and Dhaka University unit General Secretary Mohammad Mostakim, sustained injuries during the attack. The union alleges that the assailants were outsiders who had arrived on campus to participate in a procession organized by the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
The affected students submitted a written complaint to the university proctor’s office at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. University Proctor Israfil Ratan confirmed receipt of the complaint and assured that the administration would take the matter seriously. “We have not yet identified the individuals involved, but the university administration will take all necessary steps to investigate. There will be no leniency in applying legal procedures,” Ratan stated.
In response to the violence, Chhatra Union held a protest march toward the proctor’s office late Wednesday night. Tamjid Haydar Chanchal, the organization’s central president, issued a statement demanding a swift and impartial investigation. He urged the university authorities to ensure the security of the injured students and to implement stricter measures to prevent the unauthorized entry of outsiders onto the campus.
Nahiduzzaman Shipon, General Secretary of the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal, addressed the allegations, stating that his organization has not yet identified the individuals responsible. He noted that the complainants have not provided video evidence to substantiate the claim that the attackers were affiliated with his group. “Many are currently using the Chhatra Dal’s name. We are investigating whether individuals are misusing our identity to shift blame for their own misconduct,” Shipon said, adding that his organization has requested the proctor to identify the culprits and will take internal action if anyone is proven to be involved.
