Government mandates front license plates for motorcycles to improve AI-driven traffic enforcement

The Bangladeshi government has initiated a new directive requiring motorcycles to display license plates on the front of the vehicles to enhance the identification of traffic violators. This decision was finalized during a meeting on environmental pollution control held on July 18, chaired by the Prime Minister.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have been tasked with the implementation of this mandate. Officials stated that the move is primarily intended to facilitate the identification of motorcycle license plates by artificial intelligence-enabled cameras currently installed across various roads in Dhaka.

While the government moves forward with the planning phase, the directive has already sparked discourse regarding the technical and practical challenges associated with its nationwide implementation. Authorities have yet to provide a specific timeline for when the requirement will be officially enforced.
