Manipulated social media graphic falsely attributes remarks on Pakistan to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

A fabricated social media graphic falsely attributing a controversial statement to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been identified as a digital manipulation. The doctored image, which replaces the word “country” with “Pakistan” in a quote attributed to the politician, has been circulating widely on Facebook.

The manipulated graphic first appeared on August 8 within a public Facebook group titled “Mancha 71,” which boasts approximately 74,000 members. A review of the group’s activity reveals a consistent pattern of pro-Awami League propaganda, often featuring misleading content and unsubstantiated claims. The individual who shared the post, identified as Md Zohirul Islam Majumder, maintains a profile frequently dedicated to promoting the political agenda of the Awami League.

An investigation into the alleged remarks confirmed that Mirza Fakhrul never made such a statement. The original, authentic graphic was published by the media outlet Kaler Kantho on August 8. The genuine report quoted the BNP leader as saying, “The Awami League repeatedly destroys the country, and the BNP fixes it later.” The altered version replaces the word “country” with “Pakistan” to distort the meaning of the statement.

Fact-checking efforts revealed that the original quote was delivered during a speech at the 37th anniversary celebration of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), held at the National Parliament’s LD Hall on August 8. Video recordings and media reports from the event confirm that the Secretary General was referring specifically to the state of Bangladesh, not Pakistan.

Technical analysis of the doctored image further confirms its fraudulent nature. The manipulated graphic features an unauthorized “Gemini” logo in the bottom right corner, a branding element absent from the official media outlet’s original publication. This discrepancy, combined with the intentional alteration of the text, indicates that the graphic was modified using digital or artificial intelligence tools to mimic legitimate journalism for the purpose of spreading misinformation.
