Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected 23rd President of Bangladesh following parliamentary victory

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected as the country’s 23rd president in a landslide victory. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced the results on Thursday following the conclusion of voting at the national parliament.
The election saw 343 out of 349 total ballots cast between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir secured 255 votes, comfortably defeating his opponent, Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, who represented the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance and received 88 votes. According to official data, all 343 cast ballots were declared valid, leaving six ballots unused.
Following the formal announcement at 5:20 p.m., the newly elected president was greeted with applause from members of parliament. Mirza Fakhrul immediately exchanged greetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who presented him with a red rose to mark the occasion.
The counting process, which was monitored by Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, took place in the presence of the assembly members. After the declaration of the results, Mirza Fakhrul engaged in formal greetings with key political figures, including opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman, opposition deputy leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam.
Further acknowledgments were extended by various government officials and lawmakers, including Jamaat senior members ATM Azharul Islam, Mujibur Rahman, and Rafiqul Islam Khan. Additionally, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP lawmaker Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu, Minister of Finance and Planning Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Minister of Social Welfare AZM Zahid Hossain congratulated the president-elect.
