Sindh Culture Minister Alleges Federal Government Rejected Sitara-i-Imtiaz Nominations for Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa

KARACHI — Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, the Minister for Culture and Tourism of Pakistan’s Sindh province, has alleged that the federal government rejected the nominations of prominent actors Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa for the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz civilian award.
The provincial minister made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the eight-day Wees-Dhari Sindhi Theater Festival 2026 in Karachi. According to Shah, the Sindh Culture Department had recommended both performers for the national honor twice, following the endorsement of a committee comprising eminent figures.
Shah stated that the federal government turned down the proposals without providing a formal explanation or justification. He questioned why the two performers were denied national recognition despite their significant contributions to the entertainment industry and their impact on Pakistan’s cultural standing both domestically and abroad.
Highlighting the influence of artists from the Sindh region, the minister noted that they have established a strong reputation not only within Pakistan but also in India and the Gulf states. He emphasized that these artists have served as cultural ambassadors, representing the nation on international platforms, yet have largely been overlooked by the federal administration.
The minister urged the federal government to place greater importance on the cultural sector and to properly recognize the achievements of artists who have brought acclaim to the country. He argued that the exclusion of established stars like Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa reflects a broader lack of central support for the nation’s creative community.
Shah concluded his remarks by calling on the federal authorities to reconsider their approach toward cultural patronage, maintaining that artists who elevate Pakistan’s profile deserve to be celebrated at the highest national level.
