Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin confirms preparations for presidential election as international interest grows

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin stated on Wednesday that international attention is focused on the upcoming presidential election in Bangladesh, marking a significant transition following the recent mass uprising.

The election is scheduled to take place on Thursday. Speaking to reporters at the Election Bhaban, Uddin explained that the global interest stems from the unusual circumstances surrounding the vacancy of the presidency, specifically the resignation of the previous head of state before the conclusion of his term. He noted that if the outgoing president had completed his tenure, the public and international interest in this process would likely be far more subdued.

According to the official schedule, voting will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Commissioner Uddin will preside over the election, supported by a 20-member team assigned to assist the proceedings. The Election Commission is working in close coordination with the Parliament Secretariat, which is providing the necessary facilities to ensure the process remains seamless. Uddin confirmed that all preparations have been finalized with no outstanding issues.

Addressing inquiries regarding the financial cost of the election, the Chief Election Commissioner dismissed reports suggesting exorbitant expenditure. He clarified that the commission’s costs are largely limited to administrative necessities such as printing ballot papers and basic stationery. Expenses related to venue logistics, including electricity and climate control within the Parliament Building, are being managed by the Parliament Secretariat.

Uddin characterized speculation regarding massive spending as unfounded, asserting that the electoral process is being conducted with strict fiscal discipline.
