The main social and religious festival of Tripura community ‘Vaisu’ has started today Monday in Khagrachari. On the first day of the festival, women of Tripura offer flowers to Goddess Ganga in the riverbed of the district. Along with flowers, pieces of hand-woven new cloth are floated in the water for the goddess. Prayers are offered by lighting lamps on the banks of rivers and streams.
The three-day Vaisu festival is celebrated on the last two days of the month of Chaitra and the first day of the month of Baisakh. The first day is called Hari Vaisu, the second day Vaisuma and the third or last day is called BC Katal.
In different areas of Khagrachari, a competition to pick flowers from trees was held early this morning on the occasion of Hari Baisu. People of Tripura community offer various types of flowers including Madhbeelata, Alkananda, Jaba to Goddess Ganga. Forgetting the sorrows of the old year, they pray for happiness and peace in the new year.
On the occasion of Baisu, a program was organized in Khagrapurchhara area of the district this morning. Going there, it can be seen that Tripura women are offering flowers in traditional dress Rina-Risai. They are seen praying by lighting lamps on the banks of the river. Chameli Tripura, the convenor of the event organizing committee in Khagrapur, said that in the new year, new pieces of cloth woven by hand with flowers are floated for the purpose of increasing the skills and expertise in Rina-Risai weaving.
Chaitra Vaisu festival starts on 29th according to Tripura calendar. The three-day long festival will continue till April 15. Different ethnic groups of the hills celebrate New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve with different names. Sangraing of Marma community, Changkran of Mrod, Sanglan of Kheang, Changkrai of Khumid and Sangrai of Chak also started today.
