CUET authorities ban swimming in campus ponds following triple drowning deaths

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh — The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has declared all ponds and reservoirs on its campus as hazardous zones, imposing a strict prohibition on swimming or entering the water.
The directive was issued on Thursday by Professor Saiful Islam, the university’s Director of Student Welfare. According to the official notification, the measure was taken to ensure the safety of the student body. The administration stated that the ban will remain in effect until further notice.
University officials have warned that any violation of this order will be treated as an act of indiscipline. Students found disregarding the safety mandate will face disciplinary action in accordance with established university regulations.
The decision follows a series of fatalities at the institution. On Wednesday, two second-year students drowned while bathing in a campus pond. The victims were identified as Chamok Datta, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering department, and Shanto Deb, a student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department.
Previously, on July 28, Arnab Saha, a fourth-year student from the Mechanical Engineering department, also lost his life due to drowning in the same pond. The CUET campus currently maintains two primary ponds alongside several other water bodies.
